Nikhil was non-verbal and had significant cognitive delays, but he had the ability to engage with others and thrived when he did. He, like all children, desired to be accepted. Moving to our community in Bedford, NY was life-changing for Nikhil. For the first time, he was being acknowledged even outside of school. Although we all think this should happen everywhere, the truth is that it doesn't. Nikhil loved when his peers from Bedford Village Elementary School would say hello to him when we were out in the neighborhood, or when running into them at the local Chipotle. We all feel accepted when we are acknowledged, and that feeling translated into confidence for Nikhil.
The first step in community inclusion is acknowledgement that children with disabilities are part of the community. We can then cultivate relationships that are meaningful to both children with and without disabilities.
Through Team Nikhil, we hope to bring this experience to all children with disabilities by promoting and hosting local events in Westchester County, NY such as dance-a-thons and reading buddy programs.
Your support and contributions will enable us to create more inclusive experiences for children with multiple disabilities.
